Pillaged rainforest
To make way for an oil palm plantation, land in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, is stripped of trees, then burned.
Palm oil is a prime export for Malaysia and Indonesia, and global demand is growing.
Palm oil is used for a great variety of products including soap, shampoo, biscuits, cookies, French fries, potato chips, ice cream and fuel.
Since consumers are becoming increasingly aware, manufacturers of these products sometimes hide the fact that they use palm oil by simply writing “vegetable oil”.
Long Temala, Sarawak, Malaysia.
