Dead orangutangs

Orangutang females with young are often marooned on small islands of rainforest, surrounded by enormous burnt and clear-felled areas.

When food becomes exhausted, they try to move away – but few animals survive that move.

Forest or plantation workers usually find the orangutans, often killing the mother who tries to defend her young.

If the young survive the tragedy, they will probably be kept as pets. This is, of course, illegal.

The dead orangutans pictured here are among the victims documented by BOS in Nyaru Menteng, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
